The Aloha State, as it is affectionately known, is home to the bustling capital city of Honolulu and is located in the western region of the United States. Every month, it receives more than 600 requests for apostilles of documents, making it one of the busiest states in the country for this service.

The Hawaii Secretary of State can apostille both public and private documents, as long as they have been notarized by any commissioned Notary Public of the State of Hawaii. Birth and Marriage Certificates and Divorce Decrees are acceptable certified copies as long as original pen-in-hand signatures are provided from the State Registrar of the Department of Health, NOT stamp signatures.

It is important to note that court-generated documents are also acceptable for apostilles, as long as they have been exemplified by the Circuit Court. If you need to obtain a copy of an original document online, in person or by mail, you may call (808) 586-0255 or visit their website at https://portal.ehawaii.gov/home/online-services/#onlineApps. For online orders, you can also visit www.vitalchek.com.

If you need to apostille a scanned photocopy of an original document, you will need to ensure that the appropriate signature is not provided, the original document is damaged, or the original document was issued over 10 years ago. It is also important to ensure that the destination country accepts apostilles of scanned photocopies. In most cases, this is acceptable, and you can receive the apostille within 24 hours.

Please note that because the notary and the apostille are required to be issued from the same state, the scanned photocopy of the original document that you provide will be notarized and apostilled in New York City.

In conclusion, whether you are a resident of Hawaii or simply need to apostille a document for use overseas, the process can seem daunting. However, with the information and resources provided by the Hawaii Secretary of State, you can be confident that your documents will be properly authenticated and ready for use in no time.
